The holidays are just around the corner and with new semesters coming up for school maybe you are thinking of buying yourself or someone a new laptop. If you want something with an affordable price then this is why the Asus X551MAV-HCL1103E laptop should come to mind. This notebook comes with the dual core Intel Celeron N2830 processor and while is surely isn’t one of the high performers on the market it is a very decent machine. If you need something for light office or school tasks and don’t want to spend more than $300 his X551MAV could be something you should consider.
Similar to the HP 15-F003DX this isn’t a machine built for gaming and heavy using however if you are going to school and need something affordable or maybe a backup laptop for the office or at home this X551MAV-HCL1103E from Asus is a good enough machine for this. Asus makes quality notebooks that you can depend on so the brand is one of the more known in the industry. Let’s look at the low cost laptop.
The performance of the 15.6″ Asus X551MAV is clearly not going to be the fast and strongest in the industry for $249.99 but with the Intel Bay Trail-M and the Celeron N2830 dual core processor it can take care of multitasking and light office work like spreadsheets, web, email, and webcam with no problem. It comes with a clocked 2.16GHz speed with up to 2.41GHz with the Intel Burst technology. In short as long as you don’t overload this little machine with to many programs and applications it will run strong just like how it does out of the box. Too many window and appellations open expect to see some lag.
The processor is also paired with 4GB DDR3 memory and again while not the most or the best it does serve to get the job done and if you just need something to use here and there the delivers a very smooth and reliable performance. The system does only come with 1MB of Level 2 cache and has no Level 3 cache at all. While the 4GB of DDR3 is non-expandable it does come with a 500GB SATA III at 5400RPM. For the operating system this laptop comes with the Microsoft Window 8.1 64-bit version. The 64 bit system handle larger amounts of system more effectively than the 32-bit system how many software programs are actually designate for a 32-bit system.
One look at this Asus X551MAV-HCL1103E and you will clearly see that much like it predecessors this 15.6 comes with a very fluid and sleek design. Not is not a high end material you maybe used to seeing but the nice black color when combined with the texture design adds a little bit of class and style to the machine. There is a very small Asus logo on the lid to add a nice touch and the machine itself while on the lower cost is it surprisingly durable.
While the X551MAV weighs in at 4.7lbs it is still considerable a very portable machine and you should have no problem caring it to and from work or to school. If you are going to leave it mostly around the house the weight surely will not be a problem. It measures 15 x 9.9 x 1.2 inches and is just a little bit bigger than some of the other laptops in its class but in general still should fit in most carrying cases. The display is a 15.6 inch high definition 1366 x 768 max resolution screen that offers up pretty nice quality. If watching movies and streaming videos you will surely enjoy the picture however viewing angles are limited.
You won’t be watching any 1080p full HD but you can play video back at 720p and if you truly want to watch higher quality from the laptop all you need to do is connect it to a 1080p device such as an external monitor or TV using the HDMI port. The webcam is integrated into the front bezel and comes with a microphone integrated for conference calls and web chats on Skype or Tango. The graphics are from the Intel HD UMA.
Connectivity, Battery and More
Want to be connected to the internet as much as possible? Well you have both the ability to connect to a network using either the built in 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet LAN and RJ-45 connector or the Wireless-N. The laptop is not Bluetooth-enabled and there is no modem, not that anyone uses those these days. For ports you will find a digital media reader for SD card, 1 USB 3.0 port, 1 USB 2.0 port, RJ-45 connector for wired Web connection, combo headphone/microphone jack, HDMI port and VGA port.
The laptop from Asus comes with a 3-cell Lithium Ion 2600 mAh battery that should last close to 3-4 hours from a single charge. You will also get a Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive for creating your own custom DVD’s and CD’s. The speakers like most laptops in the pricing point is not the best and if you are in a place with some noise we suggest using external speakers or headphones.
Keyboard and Trackpad
Want to make sure you are getting a nice full sized keyboard and numeric pad? Well this ASUS X551MAV-HCL1103E laptop comes with both as well as trackpad with two mouse buttons on the bottom. The keys seem to be just a little sticky at first but after a little getting use to you should have no problems. We really like that laptop having the full separate numeric pad but that adds to the width. Cant have it both ways though either really want the key pad or something smaller. The multi-touch touchpad is large and works very smooth without skips and jerks.

While this is clearly not a high performing laptop it is great for the first time user, someone on a budget or something who is just in need of a office or student device. If you are someone who needs a lot of storage and need to run multiple having loading applications a once or even tend to have a lot of windows open this is not the system for you. You will simply find that within a few days or weeks the notebook is going to freeze up or just seems to take forever to load. For the money you will find the Asus X551MAV-HCL1103E is a value laptop and is perfect of light office tasks or web browsing. If you need something more powerful take a look at the HP Pavilion 15-P100DX. This is a better laptop but you are going to spend closer to $650 but you will have to determine for yourself if more money is worth it. The bottom line is this is the right machine for the right person who needs fit what this has to offer.
