Looking to upgrade from that 11 or 13 inch screen but need something with a low cost? You might just be interested in the HP 15-f111dx as this new 15.6 inch laptop is larger, budget friendly and comes with a touchscreen. Unlike like many other touch-screens this machine is more budget friendly and for under $400 you can have something that provides you good value for your money. This isn’t the most powerful notebook on the market but with the AMD A8-6410 quad core processor this machine can surely tackle most tasks of a daily user. If you are a gamer this is not quite the machine you will need as it can play some of the less demanding PC games or some of the modern ones on a low setting.
With the 750GB hard drive the HP 15-f111dx is a laptop that offers up a decent amount of spaces for all your photos, videos and music and the backlit screen allows for simple navigation through content. The list price of this HP laptop is just $399.99 making it very affordable for someone in need of a touchscreen notebook.
This laptop PC comes with the above mentioned AMD A8 processor that has the base clock speed of 2.0GHz and up to 2.4GHz with the AMB Turbo Core technology. Again this is not your high end device but it offers up enough to take care of the computing tasks that a home, office or student user would need especially if you need a laptop that is portable. Not only is it reliable but the 15.6 inch laptop delivers a smooth and fast response. When running the more common applications and software you will find that the laptop has no issues or lags to take care of the job. This laptop comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit for a more stable platform for computing needs.
Along with the A8 quad core you will get the AMD Radeon HD 8210 graphics controller that is more than capable of handling movies and videos. However only expect to be able to play older less demanding games if you are looking to play any games at all on this device. With the 750GB hard drive at 5400RPM the HP 15-f111dx has no trouble with giving you good read and write times while offering up sufficient amounts of storage. The 8GB of DDR3L SDRAM is said by HP to be faster and smoother than some of its other models and good enough to multitask handling up to a few demanding applications at once. However don’t overload the system, anything more than three demanding applications seems to push the system a little too much.
For the design you are going to get a simple but solid black casing made from a hard plastic material. While the laptop is in the sub $400 price range it lacks higher end quality or finish. The machine does have a very solid design and is sturdy just don’t expect what you get from something like a MacBook Pro or higher end ASUS machine.
The display is a well designed 15.6 inch WLED backlit HD touchscreen that offers 1366 x 768 resolution and features BrightView Technology. Its not the best of the class but it does support 10-point touch technology and gives you a very good and crisp picture. the 720p playback is good for video and some PC games.
When it comes to size this HP weighs in at 5.7 pounds, making it a little bit heavier but still light enough to be portable. The dimensions are `5.2 x 10.2 x 1 inches and HP offers 1 year warranty on parts and limited one year on labor. You will need to get your tools out if you want to do some work to the laptop and remove the battery. These design from HP is good but not great and if you have a decent laptop carrying case you shouldn’t really notice the weight of the laptop as long as you are not carrying it around for hours.
Connectivity, Battery, and More
For the battery type the HP 15.6″ laptop comes with a 3-cell Lithium Ion Polymer 2800 mAh and its good for about 4 and a hours of usage from a single charge. This is pretty good if you are going to be away from a power station for a few hours but not as long as other devices on the market that are actually a little cheaper.
You get DVD±RW/CD-RW however the optical drive speed is not specified so we don’t know exactly how fast the drive can write, rewrite or read data. You do get a digital media reader, built-in webcam, 10/100 Base-T Ethernet LAN that allows you to connect to 802.11, wireless b/g/n, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI output, and a touchscreen. You don’t get game ports, parallel ports, of Bluetooth ability. If you purchase this 15-f111dx you will get 25GB of free cloud storage from DropBox for six months, the trial version of Office and much more.
As for the speakers and sound quality we don’t really think they are worth much. Sure they provide some sound but if you are really into streaming videos and watching movies you are not going to think much of the stereo speakers included. For better listening pleasure just connect some external speakers or use your headphones so you are disappointed.
Keyboard and Input Devices
While we don’t have any problems typing on the keyboard we would have much rather seen a backlit version. For close to $400 we don’t think it would be too much to ask especially if you have to type in a dark location. The keyboard itself provides decent typing experience and other than not being backlit there are not issues. It comes with full size keyboard with numeric pad and offers up fast easy accurate typing. The touchpad works will and also has two mouse buttons.
