When you first buy your laptop and open the box you either already have the operating system installed or you have to install it. However many people think that that all they need to do. Wrong! There are a lot of things you need to do to your laptop when you first get it.
If you think about it your laptop has a lot of work that needs to be done to it to make it yours after you pull it out of the box. Below we have a few things you need to do with your laptop when you first get it to make it yours. So lets get to tweaking your laptop.
Make Sure You Install and Activate Antivirus Software
By now everyone should know how important AV software is to their laptops. You have to think about your laptop like a place where a lot of your personal and private information will be stored and shared. Would you go to a party with people you didn’t know with your PIN and account numbers on your forehead for everyone to see?
When it comes to your laptop one of the first and most important things to do is add some sort of antivirus or malware protection. Usually you will have a security suite that comes with a free 30 or 60 day trial but many people either don’t do anything after or don’t want to get the paid version. This leaves your laptop unprotected and your information for the taking.
Update Your New Laptop
I know you just bought the laptop and took it home. You are wondering why in the world you need to update a new laptop. Well sure the laptop is new to you but buy the time they build, ship and sell a laptop it could be missing important updates.
When you first get your laptop home and after you have activated antivirus software you need to look for and install recent and important updates. Usually as soon as you boot up your new laptop and connect to the internet it will tell you that some things need to be updated. You can either do this automatically or manually, its up to you just get it done.
Don’t Forget Your Old Information
Chances are if you just bought a new laptop home you either have one that is not working properly or just needed a new one because the old one is outdated. If that is the case you probably have a lot of important information that you want to take from it and put on the new one.
Until you get all your old information to your new laptop that you just bought home you can’t really say its yours. Heck it doesn’t have the information you need and use the most. Things like important files, favorite applications, browser and bookmark favorites all need to be moved from the old one to the new one.
Download the Newest Browsers and Plugins
Just like you may need to update your laptop there are chances that the browsers and plugins that came with you laptop or notebook need to be updated as well. Sometimes the browsers that are installed on the computer are not the newest and fastest.
The laptops come pre-loaded with browsers that are some times outdated and slower. Check to see what version of the browser you have and find out if it is the latest one. If not download it as well as plugins.
Much like installing and updating browsers you may also want to remove unnecessary browsers and tool bars. Too many tool bars means that you will have eaten up screen real estate that will force to you have to scroll and in some cases just slows things down.
Got A Lot of Passwords Keep them Safe
If you have the same password for everything change it. You should make sure you have different passwords for different accounts to make sure if someone does get access to something they don’t have access to everything.
With that being said if you have numerous passwords you may find it hard to keep track. For you the best option is to download some sort of password manager that will allow you to safely store and protect those passwords. Not only that but a password manager can also help you generate complex passwords that make it harder for hackers to guess.
There you have it. If you didn’t know what to do to your laptop when you first get one now you do.
