Review of Apple’s iPad Mini 3 – Is it worth it or Just a More Expensive Retina Mini?

There are rumors that the new iPad Pro will be replacing the iPad mini 3.  While as of right now it is a just a rumor you could see where there could be some truth to this.  When Apple came out with the new mini many didn’t think it warranted coming at as for other than the new fingerprint reader it was pretty much the same as the old one.

Whether or not Apple just ran out of new things to add or the fact that the tablet market just seems to be slowing with all the phablet or larger smartphones on the market a lot of people were second guessing the company as usual.  But as usual the did what they thought was best.  The new iPad Mini 3 comes with a very good display that is high resolution with Retina with a very decent battery life.

The mini 3 comes with the same SoC from the Apple iPad Mini Retina.  So when it comes to performance while not different from the other mini’s it still seems to behind of their competitors.  The iPad comes with 2 64-bit cores that are clocked at 1.3Ghz and is supported by the 1024MB of memory.  This mini handles very smooth and you also get a co-processor that actually helps to reduce the workload for the main processor.

If you are looking for a table that is great for browsing the web and doing other things this is a great choice.  The Mini 3 from Apple is very fast being able to load websites quickly with not lag and even sites with HTML5 and videos loaded and work as expected.  This particular mini still uses the same PowerVR G6430 graphics.  Playing high power games isn’t a problem either.  With the 2048 x 1536 screen resolution you are able to play a game that not only looks great but is smooth as well.

The sound is brought to life with two stereo speakers that produce quality sound.  Unlike many other tablets on the market you can actually hear and notice the bass and the sound from the mini is very well-balanced.  For a tablet we would have to say this is a very impressive unit.  The display is brought to you by a 7.9 inch Retina screen with a very very high resolution of 2048 x 1536 as mentioned above.  While you might not really need a display with such high resolution for such a small device is great to have.  With such high resolution there are many cases in which you don’t actually need to zoom in to read text because it is already razor sharp and clear.

Apple made sure that this Mini 3 came preloaded with iOS 8.1 but you can still get the iPad Mini Retina update if you desire.  Many of the features are the same as the predecessors such at the ability for the background to move as you tilt the device.  For communication you still get the same WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n that can be used on 2.4 and 5GHz networks. Just be reminded that you can not use NFC but do have access to Bluetooth 4.0. For the camera you get the 5MP iSight camera at the back that uses a 5 element lens.  You can record video at 1080p and the front webcam works well with Skype and video calls using the 1.2MP sensor.

Load in the box the accessories for the Apple iPad Mini 3 are the USB power adaptor and a cable from USB to Lighting connector. Of course there are a lot of other things you can get for your tablet if you are willing to shell out a little bit of money such as the wireless keyboard and Smart Cover.  In all while this is a new version it is still pretty much an old tablet.  Still better than most the Mini 3 is more of an update as the third generation device.  We don’t really think paying an extra $100 plus for a fingerprint reader is worth the cost when you can get the iPad Mini Retina which is just a good for less money.
