Toshiba Tecra Z40-A1402 Ultrabook Business Laptop Review and Specs

Unfortunately these days if you are in of a new business laptop you are going to pay the price for one.  Its not different when it comes to the Toshiba Tecra Z40-A102 ultrabook.  At $1,429.00 this is not your cheap laptop for the kids to play around with.  Coming with the Windows Pro version, Intel’s vPro remote as well as a rugged shell these are things you only really need if you are a business power user.

There are a lot of lower cost laptops on the market but when it comes to business laptops this Tecra Z40-A1402 is reasonably priced when compared to other business laptops from brands such as Hewlett Packard, Lenovo and Dell.

The Toshiba Tecra Z40 is probably lesser known than some of the other brands but they offer a lot of the same features.  This Z40-A1402 is a 14 inch business notebook with the Core i7 processor.  Not only does it come with a high-end processor but it weighs in at only 3.24 pounds and have excellent battery life.

When it comes to design and looks the Toshiba Tecra Z40-A1402 may appear to resemble the other aluminum ultrabooks out there on the market but this baby is a little different.  Don’t expect a smooth surface on this bad boy.  It comes with a matte magnesium shell call the “Tough Body”  which not only provides protection and allows the Tecra to stay light in weight but also help to repel those nasty unwanted fingerprints.

The ports are located on both sides of the machine and and business professional will surely tell you how important those ports can be to them.  On the left side of the Toshiba is the VGA port, a full size HDMI port, USB 3.0, and a full size SD card slot.  Then on the right side you have the power jack, the headset/mic jack, lock slot, Ethernet, and two more USB 3.0 ports.

On the Toshiba Tecra Z40-A1402 Ultrabook the keyboard is both backlit and spill resistant but the backlit isn’t the best we have seen.  The keys on the keyboards are decent and makes for comfortable typing.  Toshiba decided to go with an Accupoint tracking stick with dedicated mouse buttons just above the touchpad.   The Tecra Z40 has a touchpad that measures about 4.5 inches and its not the best touchpad we have seen as it just seems to be a little to small.

For the display you are going to be dealing with 1,366 x 768 resolution for this price however if you want a better screen resolution you will have to put up another $40 to get the 1,600 x 900 version.  The display is not reflective so those business professionals that have to do a lot of work in  plenty of lights or near a window this is perfect.  There are a lot of better display screens out there that the Tecra is going to get a lot of competition from.

Being something that is intended for business use the Tecra Z40-A1402 laptop comes with a lot of options that can be configured.  Prices range from $800 up to $1429.  For the low cost you can get 500GB of storage, the Core i3 Haswell CPU and 4GB of RAM or you can step up to the plate and get the Core i7-4600U processor and 8GB of RAM for $1429.

The performance of the Tecra is not bad but it takes about 30+ seconds just to boot up and when you are paying almost $1500 for a business laptop you would figure a little bit better boot time.  The business performance laptop does not come with any solid state storage and comes with Windows 7 not Windows 8.

Noise it not much of a factor for this Z40-A1402 and neither is heat.  Graphics performance are not high end quality but you aren’t going to be gaming on this laptop.  If you do if will be very little as this was meant to be a business laptop. Battery life is where the little beast excels and lasted for about 10 hours on one charge.

If you are on the market for a new business computer the Toshiba Tecra Z40-A1402 Ultrabook may be the choice for you.  It offers great battery life, stays cool while being worked hard, and is very light.  However remember it comes with no solid state storage, is a bit pricey, and has low screen resolution.  Some other laptops to consider could be the ThinkPads from Lenovo and some of the Dell Inspirons.  Check out our review on the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 Business Ultrabook.  It comes it a little higher price at $1550 but we think it comes with all the Tecra has and more.
